Moving Is A Big Job!

You may not be able to move mountains, but you can plan an organized move with a little help from this step-by-step time line. Depending on your situation, you might be able to delete, or may need to add, some items.

When Offer Is Accepted:
__ Call moving companies for estimates.
__ Remove and dispose of unnecessary possessions. Schedule a Garage Sale or donate items.
__ Start a file/binder to contain all estimates, receipts and inventory.
__ Start compiling a photographic/video inventory of your possessions.
__ Get a floor plan (with dimensions) of your new home to help you decide which furnishings you want to keep and which room they will go in.
__ Locate schools, healthcare professionals and hospitals in your new location.
__ Arrange to transfer your children’s school records and family medical records.
__ Contact insurance companies (auto, home owner’s, medical and life) to arrange for coverage in your new home and secure move.
__ Begin packing, one room at a time. Label each box.

4 Weeks Before:
__ Choose your moving company and sign contract.
__ Create a file of important papers, such as auto license, registration documents and title; any medical, dental and school records; birth certificates; wills, deeds, stock certificates, and other financial documents.
__ Notify the following of your change of address:

___ Banks
___ Credit Card Companies
___ Employer
___ Insurance Agent, Lawyer, Tax/Financial Advisor
___ Magazine Subscriptions
___ Post Office

__ Notify Utility Companies of date to discontinue/transfer service and/or establish service at your new home. Arrange for final readings and bills, including refunds on prepaid services. **See Our Area Services for a List of Utilities

___ Electric
___ Internet Services
___ Natural Gas
___ Sewer
___ Telephone
___ Television: Satellite, Cable, etc.
___ Trash Collection
___ Water

__ Discontinue/Transfer additional home services (housekeeper, gardener, lawn service, snow removal and pool cleaner).

3 Weeks Before:
__ Notify your state’s department of motor vehicle of your new address.
__ Start using up things you can’t move, such as perishables.
__ Make travel plans.
__ Have all drug prescriptions refilled.
__ Arrange to close existing bank accounts and open new accounts, if moving to a new area.
__ Arrange for child care on moving day.

2 Weeks Before:
__ Arrange to be off work for moving day. Contact your moving company and review arrangements for your move.
__ Arrange for transport of your pets and plants.

1 Week Before:
__ Pack suitcases with clothes and essentials for a few days, personal items, prescription medications.
__ Finish off packing.

2-3 Days Before:
__ Defrost the freezer, if your refrigerator is moving with you, make sure you empty, clean and defrost it at least 24 hours before moving day.
__ Plan for payment. If you haven’t already arranged to pay your mover via credit card, get a money order, cashier’s check, or cash for payment and tip.

Moving Day:
__ Verify! Make sure the moving truck that arrives is from the company you hired: The USDOT number painted on its side should match the number on the estimate you were given.
__ Before the movers leave, take inventory.
